Before that I was taking a train on one day, and a bus on another. I would also get rides with co-workers. Shopping and laundry are easily taken care of within walking distance (~20min) of the apartment. I bought a bike for quick trips to the store. Actually, we decided that we should continue car-pooling on Mondays. I might also continue car-pooling on Thursdays, and taking the train to my classes on Wednesday. I was really getting sick of all the driving I had to do, so in a way not being able to drive was good because I learned how to make the alternatives work. We have our old cars back now.
